Vinyl flooring remains a very popular choice with homeowners everywhere even though there are so many other flooring options out there these days. Vinyl flooring – sheet and tiles – is probably the most affordable way to get the new flooring look you want without having to sacrifice great appearance or durability.

Today’s vinyl flooring is very different to the vinyl flooring your Granny had in her kitchen years ago. Advances in manufacturing technology have led to vinyl flooring created that is more durable than ever and in colors, patterns and textures that suit any décor in almost any room in the house.

Vinyl is a manmade material, made from a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and plasticizer. It is usually rather flexible and non-porous. Various pigments are added at the manufacturing stage for color and patterning purposes. The end result is a flooring material that is very easy to care for, softer underfoot than some other flooring options and well within most peoples’ budgets.
Vinyl Flooring Sheets

To achieve the most uniform look in any room vinyl flooring sheets are the way to go in most cases. These are literally huge sheets of vinyl designed to cover the whole room in one fell swoop with no seams or gaps to worry about as you might have to with individual vinyl floor tiles.

The only downside to vinyl flooring sheets, if it can be called a downside, is that they a little tricky for an amateur to install correctly. For this reason vinyl flooring sheets are best installed by trained professionals. This will probably involve a little extra expense on your part but having a vinyl floor that looks good (no strange lumps, bumps or bubbles) and actually stays in place once it has been laid makes the small extra outlay well worth it. A professional installer will also be done in a matter of hours with the minimum of disruption to your household, something else that many people appreciate.

Just because you opt for vinyl flooring sheets does not mean you cannot have the look of tile if you want it. Vinyl flooring sheets come in a myriad different colors, textures and sizes and can even mimic more expensive flooring options like hardwood or stone rather well at just a fraction of the cost of the “real thing.”

Caring for Vinyl Floors
One of the things people love the most about having vinyl flooring in their home is just how easy it is to care for. However, like anything else it does need a certain amount of attention from its owners in order to remain looking its best.

You can quickly and easily remove dust, sand and grit particles by sweeping or vacuuming your vinyl floor. If you are going to vacuum it though make sure the model you are using does have a “hard floor” setting otherwise you may accidentally rip or scratch your vinyl floor.

Sweeping and vacuuming does not really remove dirt from a vinyl floor though so about once a week (more in a busier household) give your vinyl floors a once over with a clean mop and some nice fresh warm water. If this alone does not quite get the job done you can use a gentle detergent cleaner.

When choosing a vinyl floor cleaner it is helpful to know what the manufacturer of your particular brand of floor recommends, so ask when you are purchasing it so that you do not inadvertently use something that will damage or discolor your brand new vinyl flooring.

The one thing you should never do to a vinyl floor is use an abrasive cleaner or cleaning implement. Vinyl floors are very tough and durable but no flooring option stands up very well to be being deliberately scrubbed and scratched.
Where Will Vinyl Flooring Fit in My Home?

With the vast number of design options available in the vinyl flooring industry these days vinyl floors can be a great idea for almost any room in your home. Vinyl flooring is found most commonly in bathrooms and kitchens where it does indeed do a wonderful job. Vinyl flooring is also great for high traffic areas like the hallway or mud room as well though, for the most part because it is so easy to clean up quickly and easily.
